On January 11th, 2011, our class went on a trip to Bartram's Garden.
Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas)
-Grows 5-12 m tall
-Opposite leaves
-Small flowers with four yellow petals
-Fruit is oblong and red (around 2 cm long)
Common Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis)
-Grows up to 50 ft
-Leaves bright green (finely toothed)
-Berries attract birds as source of food
Gingko Biloba
-Grows up to 66-115 ft
-Leaves turn bright yellow
-Resistance to disease, insect-resistance wood allows gingko to live long
Yellow Wood (Cladrastis lutea)
-Grows 50-60 ft
-Flower is white/light yellow color
-Fruit hangs in a pod
Witch Hazel (Hamamelis)
-Grows 3-8 m tall
-Leaves alternately arranged
-Name means "together with fruit". Its fruit, flowers, and next year's leaf buds are all on the same branch
White Oak (Quercus alba)
-Grows 65-85 ft
-Have been known to live up to 600 years
-Leaves brown/red in fall but can be red or purple
London Plane (Platanus × acerifolia)
-Grows 20-35 m
-Leaves are thick and stiff
-Fruit grows in clusters but breaks apart during winter releasing its seeds
Sweet Bay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)
-Grows 50-90 ft tall
-Leaves are alternately arranged
-Flowers are creamy-white
-Fruit consists of dark-red ovals

-One of the largest native trees in the eastern U.S.

-Short life span of about 20 years
-Flowers often small with 4 large white/pink petals surrounding a cluster of yellow flowers

-Contains flowers of both sexes on same tree
-Favors shade more than other trees

-Fall color is yellow, red, or orange
-Flowers are white
